Hello everyone! Hope you had a fabulous Memorial Day weekend! This week’s recipes for cooking through Magnolia Table in a year fit perfectly into the holiday weekend with Strawberry Shortcake (p.285), Homemade Whipped Cream (p.285) and Mrs. Gail’s Chicken & Fettuccine Alfredo (p.219). Few things conjure up as many summer filled memories as Strawberry Shortcake, and Joanna’s recipe is a great one to kick off the summer months.
Mrs. Gail’s Chicken & Fettuccine Alfredo
While I have to say I have strong brand loyalty when it comes to alfredo sauces (Bertolli’s!), Joanna’s recipe for Chicken and Fettuccine Alfredo was quite delicious and certainly the best homemade recipe I believe I have had. The creamy cheesy sauce of the noodle’s works wonderfully with the crispy breaded chicken. Similarly, the fresh squeezed lemon was a new pairing with the dish for me, however I highly recommend it! The slight tang of the lemon juice provided a real freshness especially on the chicken that helped to cut dense feeling of the meal. Overall, if you are looking for a homemade Chicken and Fettuccine Alfredo recipe to try, you should definitely add this one to your list!
Crowd Average Rating:
The recipe for Mrs. Gail’s Chicken & Fettuccine Alfredo gained an average rating of a 7.5! Savory and very flavorful, this recipe was fabulous. As the directions were straightforward and the results delicious, I do not believe I would make any changes the next time I make this recipe!
Strawberry Shortcake
Strawberry Shortcake feels like the essence of summer, but unlike most recipes of its kind, Joanna’s dish forgoes the pound cake in favor of a biscuit, creating a unique spin on a traditional recipe. Very hearty, this shortcake recipe blends sweet homemade whipped cream, fresh strawberries, and a flakey biscuit into one entire creation. The sweetness of the whipped cream and strawberries enhance the saltiness of the biscuit, creating a dessert that is a beautiful pairing of salty and sweet.
Crowd Average Rating:
Having shared this recipe with my family over the holiday weekend, Joanna’s Strawberry Shortcake gained ratings ranging from a 6 to a 9, with an average rating of a 7.5! While the majority response was quite positive, many of us agreed that an entire portion is very hearty and filling. As Strawberry Shortcake is typically a lighter dessert, this surprised us and we found that by making each portion as an open-faced shortcake (instead of including the biscuit top), we enjoyed it even more. This recipe is definitely a unique spin on a traditional dish, so if you are looking to mix it up, I recommend trying this one out!
Homemade Whipped Cream
Sweet, fluffy, and creamy this homemade whipped cream is delicious. I almost always prefer homemade whipped cream to a typical store canister, so I was very excited to try Joanna’s recipe. As her recipe is sweeter than I typically make mine, the whipped cream feels like an intentional sweet presence on the Strawberry Shortcake or whatever you add it to. I most definitely recommend trying out homemade whipped cream, and you just might find yourself converted.
Crowd Average Rating:
As the highest rated item this week, the Homemade Whipped Cream gained an average rating of an 8! While this whipped cream was much sweeter than I am used to, several within our party who typically do not care for whipped cream said they much preferred it this way. So, whether or not you are wanting it very sweet, I highly recommend trying this recipe out as it definitely will be making it back to our table!
