While blue, green and neutrals are certainly all still the rage (and probably always will be) due to their timeless, classic, soothing tones, it seems like PINK is about to have a big moment… and not just the soft millennial pink that everyone went crazy for within the last decade. No, 2023 is the year of both bold and dusty pink and honestly, I am kind of excited for it… when used in small doses. Do you all keep track of the color of the year? While many people might just brush aside these colors as “the next trend”, the color of the year, determined by color industry giants from around the world, can help detail what is going on in both a global color and cultural sense. It certainly doesn’t describe regional trends or even societal ones, but instead takes a step back and looks at the global interests and forecasts for the year. Each year, I find this extremely fascinating as it brings a spark of hopeful anticipation to the design industry when the year starts afresh. So, here are the main 2023 colors of the year and ways you might love them, hate them or want to style them.

Love Them!

Pantone Viva Magenta 18-1750

Pantone made a huge color move this year by selecting a bright magenta that balances delicately on the line between warm and cool. Based in the red family, this color is powerful, electrifying and definitely a statement. While Pantone’s color strategists described last year’s color as emphasizing the predominance of the digital world within our lives, this year’s color looks to balance the digital and the physical realms as people seek to incorporate more natural rhythms into everyday life. The enjoyment of florals, living walls, travel, sports and outdoor adventures have resurfaced after the pandemic and therefore given nod to a powerful stunning color that also has its roots in nature. Based on the carmine dye of the cochineal beetle (which is one of the strongest dyes in the natural dye world), Viva Magenta is bright, bold, and fun with a soft side to take off the edge. While powerful, this color can make a space stand out and can be used in a variety of ways. Whether just integrating it through seasonal florals or a coffee table book for a powerful pop, or full on committing to the color and adding in a bright wallpaper, it will be sure to make your home feel fresh and dramatic.

Style: Bohemian, Modern, Eclectic, Contemporary, Hollywood Glam

Benjamin Moore Raspberry Blush 2008-30

While Pantone’s Viva Magenta seems to hold all the drama, Benjamin Moore’s Raspberry Blush most definitely speaks of vivacious joy. Still drawn to the bright pink family, Benjamin Moore chose a strong shade of coral to connect the enjoyment of life to color, shape and sound. While Raspberry Blush is the primary color of the year, Benjamin Moore announced several together within a collection with each color demonstrating bold saturated hues that make a statement. Again, like Viva Magenta, I believe this color will be perfect to play up for textiles, candles and pops in wallpaper. With such a fun and vibrant color, it gives the feel of a bright summer day, fresh tulip or crisp watermelon that always will cheer the soul.

Style: Colorful, Bohemian, Eclectic, Southern

Sherwin Williams Redend Point 9081

Contrary to the bright Viva Magenta and Raspberry Blush, Sherwin Williams Redend Point gives a subtle and warm pink that leans on brown tones to back it up. While I was quite surprised by the first two colors of the year, I have to say that this color is everything I expected. Minimal, calming, and slightly bohemian, Redend Point could even be classified as a colorful neutral. Despite Pantone and BM highlighting the colorful, playful and energetic side of nature, Sherwin Williams pulls on the soft, more calming earthy hues found in sand, soil and stone. For those looking for a subtle, rich color to integrate this year, this one’s for you!

Style: California Chic, Bohemian, Vintage, Southwest, Earthy, Minimalist

Hate Them!

While I wouldn’t say that I dislike any of these colors in particular; they definitely do take a specific preference to incorporate. To style either Viva Magenta or Raspberry Blush, you must thoroughly enjoy the color as it will pack a powerful punch. Likely, including such bold colors will make you choose between adding just a pop or entirely committing to that design direction. On the other hand, Redend Point can be more easily integrated, but will not make such a statement. For those looking to go the more bohemian, earthy or vintage route (hello precious little girls nursery!), Redend Point will be a great option, but will not give you the drama of the first two colors. For many, color is rooted in personal preferences, so what is loved by one, might be hated by another, but even so, each of these colors speaks to the wider longing for nature, warmth and connection.

Ways To Style The Color Of The Year

Despite many assuming that the only way to incorporate the color of the year and to freshen your space is to bring out the paint materials, there are a plethora of other design options if you are looking to update your home! First off, don’t feel pressured to change out your belongings or update your paint colors every year just because of a new color. But, that said, if you love the color mentioned here, bringing in a few décor or furniture pieces highlighting the color that you love, can transform your space and how you feel about your home without giving an entire overhaul.
