Happy New Year! With our little one on the way and set to arrive in just a few weeks, I have started off this year in full “nesting” mode and am SO excited to finally start sharing our nursery ideas with you all! When we first found out we were expecting and decided to keep the gender a surprise, I struggled with what direction to take his or her nursery in. I landed on yellows, greens and neutrals early on, but it wasn’t until thinking back over our time living here in Germany did I stumble upon our idea… an alpine themed nursery! Having been living in Germany for just under 2 years now, Charlie and I have loved each of our trips to the Alps whether they be in Germany, Austria or Italy and there is something simply magical about the various shades of blue, green, yellow, and pink that the mountains display throughout the year. Pair these colorful views with the sounds of cow bells and scenes of overflowing porch boxes on little chalets and soon I was hooked on this vision! I certainly will be diving into various projects and the final reveal of this vision in the weeks to come, but I wanted to start off with some inspiration and mood boards I have gathered for our gender neutral alpine themed nursery. Certainly each of these designs could be pulled to favor a girl or boy, but since our babe is still a surprise, these designs meet in the middle. Let’s dive in!

Soft vs. Colorful Alpine Inspiration

When looking for gender neutral nursery inspiration, it is common to immediately find neutral color palettes layered with texture. While I do really value this look, I wanted our nursery to have a bit more color interest and therefore set out to design a gender neutral alpine themed nursery that could be taken in either a soft OR colorful direction.

While paint and wallpaper are unfortunately out of the question for us as we are renting, to do this, I used an alpine scene in art as my launching point, pulling colors and tones from there. These two pieces were items that I loved and have highly considered, while also keeping my eyes open for finding an art piece second hand while thrifting.

For a softer palette more in line with traditional baby pastel tones, a watercolor styled art print (available in multiple sizes) pairs nicely with a soft green gingham bed skirt, small leaf print accent pillow, pastel blue lamp with scalloped shade and soft green, blue, and pink numbered storage cubes.

With a more colorful oil painting (also available in a variety of sizes), the same green gingham can be used for the bed skirt, but bolder mustard yellow and deep green tones are pulled out in the accent pillow, green lamp with wicker shade and the reverse side of the “1,2,3” storage cubes are used which feature green, yellow and blue numbers instead. If you have the ability to paint your space, this scheme could be particularly nice with contrast trim details or even a color drenched room.

Either of these art pieces lend themselves very well to later pulling in stronger pinks, greens, yellows or blues should you want to make the nursery even more gender specific once the baby has arrived.

Pops Of Alpine Whimsy

Regardless which art piece you lean towards, it is so important to bring in pops of whimsy for this alpine themed nursery! When visiting the Alps, you frequently will see light wood interiors, carved wooden details on both interior and exterior designs, arched entryways, cows roaming in pastures and soft furs draped in prams, over seats and across floors, especially in the winter. Considering these pieces, I was inspired to incorporate a cow mobile above the crib, light wooden furniture pieces (some with carvings and others with simplistic modern forms), an arched mirror, ribbons hung above the artwork and a soft fur rug. Each of these elements work for either color direction and help to bring a traditional, yet refined whimsical flair to this Alpine themed nursery.

Final Thoughts

I have loved creating these inspirational mood boards for our Alpine themed nursery and can’t wait to share with you the projects that have emerged from them for our space in the weeks to come! Our little one may never remember his or her nursery or the time he or she spent living in Germany, but regardless, this space feels perfectly fit to welcome them home during our time here! Certainly, our space has been inspired by our time in the Alps, but change out the art scenes for other mountain ranges, landscape scenes or animal details and it could easily fit a multitude of gender neutral nursery ideas!

Happy creating!
