Happy New Year! Now that we are officially into the new year and settled into the cold, wintery month of January, I wanted to round out the final part of our hot drinks series with a favorite… a Eggnog Chai Latte. Snowy, icy and raw, drizzly days seem to just beckon for hot drinks, so trying out a new creation is a great method to keep away the winter blues. Perfect for using up any holiday eggnog you may still have on hand, this hot drink is smooth, creamy, spiced and delicious. While eggnog can be quite polarizing, the flavors of the chai and creaminess of the milk help to create a rich, subtle and delicious hot drink. If you’re not a chai or eggnog fan, hop over and check out the other two parts of this delicious hot drink series featuring an easy hot chocolate and holiday Kinderpunsch (mulled cider)

Eggnog & Chai: A Beautiful Blend

While delicious, I believe that eggnog might be one of the more polarizing holiday drinks out there. Despite its spiced creaminess, the thick consistency can send many people right over the edge. Personally, I have a love-hate relationship with eggnog as I love the flavor but don’t care for the super thick consistency. Regardless though, somehow each year I find myself buying a small bottle to see if this will be the year that it changes. Despite my best efforts, I typically find that no, indeed the consistency still isn’t quite right and therefore launch into a multitude of other ways to use up my bottle of eggnog. It was precisely in this situation that I discovered how eggnog could transform a hot chai latte.

Once steeped together, the spices of the chai compliment the flavor of the eggnog, while the eggnog provides a touch of sweetness and the milk (and bit of water) help to create a thick and creamy but not overpowering texture. While not complicated, this eggnog chai latte creation helps to highlight the best of each element while preventing any one player from stealing the show.

Toppings & Extras

Do you normally include the extras of a recipe? The items that aren’t required but are suggested by the cook? While I sometimes just skip by the extra, recommended items, I have found more recently that frequently they bring the whole thing together. Certainly, I believe the extra dash of cinnamon, cloves, whipped cream and/or foamed milk do that for this eggnog chai latte. Now, I totally understand if you don’t have these items on hand, if they aren’t your favorites or if you are tweaking the recipe to make it your own (and please do!), but if you are looking to really experience this latte to the fullest at least once, I believe these little extras make the recipe complete.
