How do you like to decorate your front porch for Christmas? Are you a garland and wreath fan, Christmas trees flanking the door kind of gal or do you prefer to keep your décor inside? While Charlie and I have tried a variety of Christmas entry options, this year I wanted to keep it classic with a twist. By pairing fresh natural greenery with faux garland, dried German Statice and string lights, our entry soon went from fall pumpkins to Christmas delight. Whether you are still determining how to decorate your front porch for Christmas or you have a plan you hope to pull together after Thanksgiving, I hope that these next simple suggestions might inspire you to become a little creative with your entry this year.

Start With The Faux

In years past, I have made evergreen garlands, strings of cranberries and a whole host of fresh greenery projects (check out last years easy holiday wreath HERE!). This year however, with Charlie’s health and for the sake of ease, I went on the hunt for a solid faux greenery garland that was attractive but would not break the bank. After a little hunting, I found a great faux garland with gold bells at TJ Maxx. Unfortunately however even with buying the last two strands they had, I could not entirely frame our door. Seeing this, I highly recommend starting with faux garland (this Icy Juniper Garland is very similar to my TJ Maxx find just without the gold bells!) and then adding pieces of fresh greenery to beef it up. Use it as a starting point and then add in a mix of fresh or dried greenery pieces to continue the garland around the remainder of your door frame. You could add holly, boxwood, magnolia, rosemary, eucalyptus, spruce, Leyland cypress, Frasier fir or any fresh greenery around that you can find to compliment your faux greens. Adding this touch will help to provide more dynamic textural interest and even a pleasant scent as you enter!

Green & White With A Twist

After adding real evergreen clippings into my faux garland, I decided to integrate a mix of dried German Statice pieces as well to create a classic green and white aesthetic with a floral twist. Having found bunches of German Statice on sale at Hobby Lobby, I used green floral wire to wrap the stems of the German Statice together to create a garland. With about 6 bunches of Statice (3 bunches for each side of the door), I made two garlands that could be intertwined with my faux evergreen garland. This addition provided both bulk and floral texture to the entry which I absolutely love! Similarly, if you have a small space above the door like I do, use the extra small pieces of the German Statice that break off during the garland creation to string across the top and create a full frame of detail.

Go For Easy Installation

Once you have figured out the garlands and greens you want to use, go for easy installation. I have found that using floral wire and Command hooks are some of my favorite ways to install garland around our front door. Start with adding hooks to either side corner of the door, then add a hook to either side in the middle and the bottom. If your garlands are super heavy, be sure to get the stronger Command hooks or even add a small nail to the top corner instead of a Command hook. Next, use the floral wire to add a small loop to the top and bottom of each garland and then attach them to the Command hooks. Lastly, wrap the middle of the garlands with the wire and attach them to the middle Command hook to create a secure hold. This installation method makes cleanup after the holidays so much easier as you just unhook the garlands from the Command hooks and then take down the hooks following all your Christmas festivities!

Final Look

Final Thoughts

Even though decorating our front porch for Christmas went nothing like I originally had imagined, I absolutely love the final look. I think sometimes a little bit of an unusual circumstance actually helps to instigate a more creative result! After adding string lights and setting them on a timer, our little front porch entry can both shine day and night. Do you normally have a favorite way to decorate your front porch for Christmas? If so, I would love to know in the comment section below!

Happy decorating!
