While some weeks of Cooking Through Magnolia Table showcase three recipes, this week featured just two delicious recipes including Joanna Gaines’ Mom’s Bulgogi (p.240) and Last Minute Party Dip (p.149). These two recipes are very different, but they have given us one of the highest rated weeks thus far which truly is amazing considering the vast array of tasty dishes that have been featured. Taste tested by a variety of family members, both the Bulgogi and dip recipes received such rave reviews, they certainly will be coming back to our table in the future.

Mom’s Bulgogi

As my uncle is Korean, I have tried a variety of Korean dishes over the years and I have to say that Bulgogi is one of my favorites. That being said, I was very excited to try the recipe that Joanna’s Mom’s has perfected. As she mentions, this recipe creates a slightly sweeter, more “Americanized” version of Bulgogi which became a huge hit with my family, including those who do not typically like to expand their palettes. Sweet, salty and wonderfully marinated, this Korean style beef is delicious and simple to pull together. Similarly, the addition of the toasted sesame seeds and green onions over meat on a bed of rice is the perfect final touch for this dish.

Crowd Average Rating:

With many wonderful reviews, this Bulgogi recipe gained an average rating of 9! Ranging from a 7 to a 10, the ratings and reviews on this dish were very positive. I will note however, that this rating is primarily for the meat and rice. Unfortunately, I could not find the specific kimchi seasoning in store and the alternative assortment of spices I used brought intense heat (without the same punch of flavor) to the cucumbers. Due to this, I am not sure we had the proper experience of the cucumber kimchi salad. Regardless, the Korean beef was certainly something I will make again.

Last-Minute Party Dip

While the name of this recipe implies its ease, it does little to describe the actual dip, so I was very curious as to how this dish would come together. To my pleasant surprise, this recipe was so delicious. With just seven ingredients, this Last Minute Party Dip has a wonderful mix of flavors with a soft creamy cream cheese base. The sun dried tomatoes give a fun pink tone to the dip, while the artichoke hearts and green onions provide a pop of color that makes it attractive to display. Made without any nuts (a great dip option for those who are allergic) or labor intensive steps, this dip would be perfect for a crowd or party including bridal showers or baby showers as the pink tone makes it very festive.

Crowd Average Rating:

With three ratings of a 10, this Last Minute Party Dip gained an average rating of a 9! Despite not knowing the flavor direction from the title, this dip is definitely worth trying out and certainly will be coming back to our table in the future! Delicious on crackers or even celery, the Last Minute Party Dip is a recipe worth pulling together especially if you enjoy sun dried tomatoes or artichoke hearts.

Amazingly, the joy of trying new recipes, rating dishes and dinner discussions has not grown old and I am looking forward to the next 19 weeks of our challenge.
