While it seems like we just left the soup section a couple of weeks ago, it actually has been 30 odd weeks since our last soup recipe. Despite this week not officially having a soup recipe, the Chicken Pot Pie had many soup-like tendencies that were warm, comforting and perfect for the chilly weather that is slowly setting in. This week of cooking through Magnolia Table in a year brought us the Quick Orange Walnut Sweet Rolls (p.57) and Chicken Pot Pie (p.197) mentioned above. Both recipes were delicious and thoroughly enjoyed around our table, so I highly recommend trying them out if you are looking for delicious, heart warming, soul encouraging cozy food.
Quick Orange Walnut Sweet Rolls
Like my Easy Upside Down Apple Sweet Rolls, these Quick Orange Walnut Sweet Rolls use refrigerated crescent rolls, brown sugar and butter, however that is about where the similarities end. Even using some of the same basic ingredients, these Quick Orange Walnut Sweet Rolls have a totally different, but wonderfully delicious taste as my own sweet roll recipe. The rolls are soft, caramelized and very balanced between the soft crescent roll texture and crunch of the walnuts. I really enjoyed having walnuts in each bite as they are incorporated into the roll filling and believe they definitely make the recipe. For a quick and easy sweet roll, these definitely are delicious!
Crowd Average Rating:
Coming in with a rating of 7.5, these Quick Orange Walnut Sweet Rolls would be a wonderful breakfast treat. Unfortunately for us, they do call for a lot of cinnamon so Charlie is more restricted in eating them, however the flavors are wonderful. Similarly, in the future, I might make a little less of the orange glaze, as we had a ton of leftover glaze. The rolls are plenty sweet without the glaze, however the glaze had a delicious orange flavor, so a little goes a long way. Overall, I thought this recipe was wonderful and certainly will make it for a Saturday morning special treat in the future.
Chicken Pot Pie
Chicken Pot Pie is one of Charlie’s favorite foods. Growing up, my family did not eat it much, and while I have always enjoyed the meal, it hasn’t been my go to dish because of the potential for soggy topping in leftovers. That being said, this recipe is delicious and Joanna Gaines has a super unique twist that totally transforms traditional chicken pot pie, especially the leftovers. While the topping can’t be prevented from becoming soggy, she does suggest serving the chicken pot pie over mashed potatoes and this simple addition is such a game changer. The mashed potatoes add a great texture to the pie, especially once the crescent roll topping is no longer flaky and fluffy.
Crowd Average Rating:
This great dinner recipe gained an average rating of 7! Do be aware though that we nicknamed this dish “chicken pot soup” for its super saucy base. At first, this revelation threw us off, however once we discovered that it acted as a gravy to the mashed potatoes, we really enjoyed it. We found that this recipe was best served in a bowl and can even be treated as a chicken soup if you run out of mashed potatoes and the topping becomes too soggy. I most certainly can see how Joanna mentions it is a family favorite of theirs in the winter as this recipe is so comforting and flavorful.

Final Thoughts
As we are entering the final weeks of 2022 which bring cold weather, I am so looking forward to our remaining soup and stew recipes within the Magnolia Table. The “Chicken Pot Soup” recipe this week got me extremely excited for the warm comforting recipes that we have remaining. We officially have under 30 recipes to go and at least 6 of them are soups and 6 are desserts, so it looks like we have a great 11 weeks ahead of us!
Happy cooking!
