5 weeks left! We officially have only 5 weeks to go until the recipes run out and our entire cooking through Magnolia Table challenge is complete. This week, being filled with Thanksgiving, brought us a tremendous amount of good food, including Joanna Gaines Chicken & Wild Rice Soup (p.105), Herbed Cheddar Scones (p.136) and Dulce De Leche Apple Pie (p.273). Thankfully, our Sunday dinner crew helped us enjoy these dishes as well so our leftovers have not been too extensive, but still well enjoyed.
Chicken & Wild Rice Soup
When first reading this recipe, it sounded to be an extremely savory and comforting dish. To my excitement, that is exactly how it turned out. Savory, creamy, warm and flavorful, this Chicken & Wild Rice Soup is a great staple for a cold evening. While we enjoyed it, I will note that it became more of a stew for us than a soup. To keep it warm for our Sunday dinner, I did cook it a little longer than Joanna recommended, so it was a very thick soup when we ate it the first night. That being said, by the time we enjoyed the leftovers, most of the broth was absorbed and it became a chicken and wild rice stew. The results were still very tasty, but it definitely has a hearty feel to it and is not just a light soup.
Crowd Average Rating:
Due to its stew-like texture, this Chicken & Wild Rice Soup gained a crowd average rating of 6! With two ratings above a 7 and two at a 5, this recipe was loved by some and wasn’t necessarily a favorite of others. A couple of people around our table really enjoyed the stew-like texture and others really were expecting a soup, so for some, the expectations didn’t quite line up with the result. That being said, if you ate the dish entirely as soon as the recipe instructs, it likely would receive much better ratings.
Herbed Cheddar Scones
Herbed Cheddar Scones….the name even sounds delicious. Thankfully, the final product is just as good. Flaky and flavorful, these scones are very savory and absolutely perfect for dipping into the hot Chicken & Wild Rice Soup above. While not as soft and fluffy as the Orange Scones from Week 19, these scones were still delicious and definitely are a perfect pairing for any hot bowl of soup.
Crowd Average Rating:
Coming in with a crowd average of 7, these Herbed Cheddar Scones are quite tasty! I will note however that during the creation, I had to add quite a bit more liquid to help the dough come together, however that did not seem to impact the flavor at all. Similarly, the cheddar flavoring is very subtle, however the hint of the herbs makes the blend quite delightful.
Dulce De Leche Apple Pie
Over the years, I have tried a number of apple pie recipes and once I found my favorite, I haven’t tried many others since. So, when I saw that I would get to try a new apple pie recipe, I was excited to see what it would be like. This recipe is very tasty with perfectly cooked apples in scrumptious pie filling with the sweet addition of the dulce de leche on top. Joanna’s method of cooking the apples before placing them in the pie crust allowed for the perfect apple texture without all of the extra juices that frequently make apple pies soggy. Overall, if you do not have a go to apple pie recipe, I definitely would recommend trying hers out.
Crowd Average Rating:
Coming in as our last recipe of the week, this Dulce De Leche Apple Pie gained an average rating of a 7! Having had another favorite recipe to compare to, this dish certainly won over in certain areas and lost in others. I will note that I slightly decreased the amount of cinnamon that was called for to allow Charlie to eat it, though I believe it would have been wonderful with the original amount, so if you enjoy cinnamon, definitely leave it in!

Final Thoughts
With only 14 recipes to go, it is hard to believe that this year is almost coming to an end. By now, my cooking through Magnolia Table in a year guide is slightly crinkled, splattered and looks very well loved. This journey has been such a joy and I definitely am still looking forward to our final recipes to try. Having only previously made 2 of the 14, each of these will be delicious surprises I am sure. If you are cooking along with us, what recipe has surprised you the most?
Happy cooking!
