I love natural fall decor. Decor that doesn’t have to be stored year to year but yet celebrates the most beautiful changes in the flowers, leaves, fruits and veggies of the season. So, I was especially excited when this year I stumbled upon an amazing section of pumpkins in my grocery store (these varieties are edible!) and immediately, I set out to find a few great “stackable” options to bring home with me. Limited to transport by my bike, I slightly scaled back my initial pumpkin wishes and decided on two perfect little gourds. As many pumpkin stacks feature three or more, I wanted to add a bit more interest to my two pumpkins and wound up creating a heather filled pumpkin stack. Regardless if you want to pair your pumpkins with heather, greenery or flowers, here are all the ways to create a perfect little pumpkin stack with interest with only 5 supplies!

Part 1: Creating A Heather Wreath

While I love using the bright pink, purple and white heathers this time of year here in Germany, if heather isn’t readily available in your area, don’t let that stop you from creating a beautiful pumpkin stack with interest! Feel free to substitute the heather for other greenery options, dried flowers, fresh flowers or even faux options if that is what you have on hand. I will note that heather dries nicely over time (like statice, baby’s breath, etc.) which allows it to hold up for several weeks throughout the fall season, so if you are choosing a different fresh flower variety, just keep the wilting time in mind depending on how long you would like it to last.

Supplies

Steps

1 – Once you have gathered your materials, whether that be a heather plant or other items of your choice, lay them out on your workspace.

2 – Begin by cutting a long strip of wire and wrapping it twice to make a circle about half the size of your base pumpkin. You will use this as your wreath form.

3 – Next, cut 3 or 4 long pieces of heather and simply weave them around and between the wreath form. It is totally fine if the ends fan out a bit.

4 – After your form is covered in heather, cut 4 to 7 pieces of heather and wrap the ends tightly with a 1” long piece of floral wire to create a little bundle.

5 – Following this, place either super or hot glue at the base of your bundle (near the wire wrapped area) and attach it onto your heather covered wreath form.

6 – Continue creating little bundles of heather, wrapping the ends and gluing them to your form, each time covering the ends of the previous bundle.

7 – Once your wreath is totally covered, feel free to cut a few loose heather pieces to stick into any bare spots that might be showing. Now your heather wreath is finished! Feel free to make as many wreaths as needed if you are stacking your pumpkins higher than 2 or if you are making multiple pumpkin stacks.

Part 2: Assembling Your Heather Filled Pumpkin Stack

After your heather wreath is finished from part 1, set the wreath on top of your base pumpkin. To ensure bare spots do not present themselves after putting it on the pumpkin, look from all angles and add extra bits of heather if needed. From there, simply set the next smaller pumpkin on top to create a bit of a pumpkin heather sandwich. The top pumpkin should fit nicely within the heather wreath, making your pumpkin stack both attractive with interest and stable!

Final Thoughts

In just a few minutes and with only 5 ingredients, you can create such a pretty display for your dining table, fireplace, mantle, front porch, chest or even coffee table! By creating a heather wreath to fit between the pumpkins, you not only enhance the stability of your pumpkin stack, but you also are able to add a pop of color and textural interest that makes it so unique and changeable based on the pumpkin sizes / colors you have found. But even if you don’t have a few minutes to make a heather wreath, you also could use a small premade wreath to sandwich between your pumpkins and simply skip to the assembly part 2! Either way, this natural fall decor DIY was really simple to come together but definitely makes our space filled with cozy vibes this season. Have you ever tried anything like this? Or would you?! Happy creating!
