I am all about a simple yet impactful diy. Make it for Christmas and it is even more of a favorite! So when I thought of repurposing the leftover wallpaper scraps from our powder room refresh (you can see that HERE!) into fun, Christmas ornaments that also were baby friendly, you must know I was VERY excited! As this will be our first Christmas with a little one (and a very interested and adventurous little one at that!)I wanted to make our Christmas tree a bit more kid friendly while also bringing a few stylish patterns to our decor. It was in pondering this decision while cleaning out boxes that I stumbled over our wallpaper scraps and was struck with the idea of combining the two: a fun wallpaper pattern added to a simple, kid friendly Christmas ornament! Truly, this was such an easy project and I loved how they turned out with their whimsical pattern and textured velvet ribbons, so whether you are needing to be kid friendly or not, I highly recommend adding this simple wallpaper ornament diy to your holiday decor bucket list.

Wallpaper Scraps: Sourcing & Type

Sourcing

If you have ever wallpapered a space, you know that inevitably you will end up with a plethora of wallpaper scraps. Scraps not quite tall enough or wide enough or a door cutout or even a whole roll leftover which was beyond the return window. However you have come by wallpaper pieces, this is a great way to use them up while also tying your Christmas tree to other rooms within your home.

If you do not have any wallpaper scraps already on hand, certainly you could buy a roll online to use for a set of ornaments or simply keep your eyes open when shopping on Facebook Marketplace, while antiquing or from family or friends, as I frequently have stumbled upon partial rolls, scraps or a single roll for sale on these platforms.

Wallpaper Type

While this project could use traditional wallpaper or removeable (peel and stick) wallpaper, I used peel and stick wallpaper for this diy as it was what I had leftover from our powder room. If you are interested in wallpapering a space, I discuss the pros and cons between traditional wallpaper and peel and stick in THIS article, but for the ornaments, both are good options though the traditional wallpaper will need an additional item (mentioned below) for adhesion.

Supplies

  • Shatterproof ornaments – I used 3.15” white smooth ball ornaments like in THIS multi pack, though any size or color is possible as it will be covered
  • Wallpaper – I used THIS peel and stick wallpaper though you can use traditional wallpaper, just be sure to also get adhesive backing like THIS
  • Scissors
  • Ribbon – I used THIS frayed velvet ribbon to add in a more luxurious texture, but feel free to use any ribbon you have on hand

Steps

1 – To begin this diy, gather your materials and remove the cap from the ornament.

2 – Next, with your scissors (or a X-acto or paper cutter), cut about ¼ – ½” wide by 10.5” long strips from your wallpaper. This measurement may vary if you chose a different size ball ornament, though just wrap your wallpaper around the ball to get a general length each strip should be. For the width, don’t cut much wider than ½” to prevent creasing when adhering to your ornament.

If using traditional wallpaper, be sure to peel off one side of the adhesive backing and attach to the backside of the wallpaper before cutting into strips. From there, you can proceed with cutting and attaching the strips as normal.

3 – When you have cut several strips, peel off the backing of the wallpaper and press each piece of wallpaper around your ornament. Press out any creases that may emerge. If the strips are too long, simply trim near the top of the ornament. This will be covered when the cap is put back on. Continue wrapping and layering the strips until all the ornament is covered.

4 – After the ornament is fully covered with the wallpaper, place the cap back on the ornament and cut a piece of ribbon 9 to 12” long. Thread through the cap before looping into a knot at the top to create a hanger for the ornament.

5 – Repeat the steps above for the remaining ornaments and then your wallpaper ornaments are ready to add to your tree!

Final Thoughts

I absolutely love the way that each wallpaper ornament turned out! Certainly the pattern doesn’t stay consistent throughout the bauble, but I find the abstraction gives a modern and whimsical touch, especially once complete with the velvet ribbon and displayed together as a set. With 5 simple steps, this project can easily be completed in naptimes, while watching a movie or with a group of friends as the setup and cleanup are extremely minimal. Whether you are looking for a way to include attractive kid friendly decor, want to add a more designer touch to your tree or both, this diy is certain to be a stunner. But I would love to know! Would you make this simple wallpaper ornament diy? Be sure to save this post for your holiday projects and send it to a wallpaper loving friend!

Happy diy-ing!
