Cold and refreshing. Sweet and filling. This summer, I have been absolutely loving fresh, homemade smoothies. Without air conditioning, ice in drinks or a large iced coffee in hand, cooling down in a European summer looks a little different than in South Carolina, so these cold summer smoothies have been just the thing. As I have been scouring recipes, I realized that many which offer a punch of protein do so through the addition of protein powder and while I have heard lots of wonderful things about the merits of protein powder, I have yet to integrate them into my diet. That being said, these three summertime smoothies are protein rich recipes that I have enjoyed over the past few weeks without the addition of protein supplements and thought I might share them with you all as well. Whether for breakfast, a snack or even dessert, if you are hoping for a sweet and nutritious summer treat, give these recipes a try and feel free change them up to experiment with creating your own!

The Classic: Strawberry & Banana Smoothie

Perhaps one of the most classic smoothie combinations out there, a good Strawberry Banana Smoothie is hard to beat. This recipe adds a little twist with the addition of walnuts and honey which provide just a touch of nutty flavor and textural interest. As a great source of omega-3 fatty acids, protein and full of anti-inflammatory properties, the walnuts within this recipe help to add a health boost to compliment the vitamin C, potassium and protein of the strawberries, bananas and Greek yogurt, without overwhelming the strawberry banana flavor. Hearty and enjoyable, this recipe has become a favorite of mine for breakfast or as a mid afternoon snack.

The Dessert: Peach Delight Smoothie

While this recipe might not be a great breakfast option, this Peach Delight Smoothie is perfect for an afternoon snack or after dinner treat. June and July would not be the same without a plethora of peach recipes and this part smoothie, part milkshake blend is fabulous. Since we can’t just hop on over to Chick-Fil-A to enjoy their summertime special while here in Germany, this Peach Delight Smoothie felt like the next best thing. Replace part of the ice cream of a traditional peach milkshake with plain Greek yogurt to increase the protein content and you will have the perfect drink to enjoy with just the right amount of sweetness.

The 5 Fruit Blend: Mixed Berry Smoothie

Lastly, but certainly not least, we have the Mixed Berry Smoothie including five different fruits within our summertime smoothies collection! Start your day packed with good antioxidants, vitamin C and fiber through the addition of blackberries, blueberries, raspberries, strawberries and banana. To also provide a bit more vitamin E and protein, add in a handful of almonds. Once blended the almonds and berry seeds provide a nice texture while the banana helps provide a bit of sweetness to the berry flavor. I choose to add almonds instead of almond butter as the almond butter has a much more concentrated almond flavor, while the handful of almonds provides a bit of texture and nutrients without overpowering the berries. Overall, this recipe is perfect for breakfast, lunch or dinner and is extremely refreshing with its blend of sweet and tangy flavors.

Final Thoughts

With so many amazing smoothie combinations out there, you really can enjoy almost endless varieties so feel free to try your own! Swap with different milks, remove the nuts or add more, add fresh greens or even change up the fruits for more tropical additions. Truly, there are so many options for summertime smoothies! Just be sure to add at least one liquid, one frozen element (fruit or ice), one thickener (like banana) and one interesting item (like honey, nuts, nut butters, flax seed, spices etc.) and the delicious combinations are almost endless. These three recipes have been staples in our house the last few weeks, but what are some of your favorite combinations? Let me know in the comment section below and be sure to save to your summertime recipe list!

Happy making!
