As I mentioned in the Whimsical Dining Room Save vs. Splurge post last week, the dining room is one of my favorite rooms of the house. Home to such daily beauty of friends, family and loved ones gathering around a dinner table, the dining room can be, if you let it, a hub of life. Sometimes this hub happens naturally, and sometimes through great intention, but either way, it can be a special place. I have found that most often, the things that I am most proud of and that I take joy in, took at least some degree of intention. Whether that is design, a gathering, a budget, a landscape plan, a Bible study group, a casual get together…there comes a point in which I have to come up with a vision and then move towards it. It may not come together exactly as I imagine, but it is this pursuit that brings about something lovely. It is in this mindset, that I wanted to create a transitional dining room mood board to help initiate a vision for those looking to create an intentional space that meets the needs and desires of your daily life while blending a modern and traditional design aesthetic.
Save
When I worked as a college student giving tours of the interior design program that I attended, I was asked on a number of occasions what the real purpose of design was and if it was only accessible to those willing to heavily invest. While it is to some degree true that design can be a luxurious field, it is also a field that can change the everyday lives of you and me. Having a vision for how you want to use your space and how you want it to make you feel, all while accomplishing it within your means, is no simple task. But it is in this, that I hope to make you feel encouraged. Design can be achievable even with primarily hand me downs and clearance finds.
For instance, in this transitional dining room mood board, you can pair together a modern art piece with more traditional dishware used as décor. Whether you have inherited a collection of antique plates that you don’t want to use either for sentimental or labor intensive reasons (i.e. they are hand wash only), or you have found a few great pieces at an antique store, flanking modern artwork with traditional plates gives your space a collected and comforting appearance while making it feel timeless and using what you have on hand.

Splurge
While many “splurge” items can be substituted for a more budget friendly alternative, there are some pieces in which you want to invest for the sake of the craftsmanship, materials or level of detail. In this particular transitional dining room scheme, I believe that this natural handwoven jute and wool rug designed by Erin Gates in such a piece. This rug offers an attractive appearance and design details that make it stand out compared to the other jute rugs on the market. Similarly, these added details can provide a polished cohesive design plan that creates an authentic spatial experience.

Mixing Together
As I mentioned in past Save vs. Splurge articles, creating an intentional vision does not mean that you have to live entirely in one box or another. These mood boards are truly to help be a guide to how you might use a mix of what you have on hand, what you might find on a whim and what you might like to invest in. Using a blend of traditional pieces such as the chandelier, chairs, and wall hanging plates while pairing them with a more modern table, piece of artwork or console can help to create a transitional dining space that surpasses one single style while being tailorable to a variety of color schemes.
If you love these ideas but need a more specific design plan for your space and how you might be able to incorporate both new and existing pieces, I would love to assist you through our E Design packages to make your space become one that you LOVE, that you envision for your family and that caters to your needs.
Final Thoughts
Creating a vision that blends the old, new and everything in between can be challenging, but I love how these transitional dining rooms have become such a tasteful conglomeration of styles. Whether these boards can give you a vision for the future exactly as they are or help you to think through your own pieces and color tones, I hope that they can provide you with the tools for establishing a dining room that is the hub of your home.
Happy designing!
