I always love seeing bountiful fall planters with their colorful foliage and textural interest. Going into a garden center or walking up to a front porch decorated for fall just warms my heart and makes me thrilled for the season. Here, in South Carolina, it can be a challenge to know when to fix fall planters or window boxes as frequently my summer annuals are still thriving into at least early November, and then it feels as if I should move on to Christmas décor. Sometimes, I must delay my fall planter box dreams, but even so, these next examples are ones that certainly speak to my fall loving heart and inspire my own front porch. I hope that they can do the same for you or at least spur you on to try your own seasonal planter combinations.

What do you put in a planter in the fall?

Before deciding on your preferred planter, grouping or inspiration to emulate, it is important to think through plants, flowers and foliage that thrive in the fall season. While each of these selections vary slightly based on your climate and planting zone, they are items that traditionally do well in fall weather. You even can integrate fresh or faux pieces that are not found in your typical garden centers, as Trader Joes, craft stores or other artisan markets frequently have unique fall stems that are perfect for fall planter box designs. A few great options are:

Fall Planter Boxes

Whether you are wanting to start a window box, front porch urn or table arrangement, these planters are attractive options to encourage bountiful fall designs. Footed / pedestal urns can help to elevate the height of the arrangement, while a bowl style provides a lower design that is better for tabletop settings.

Final Thoughts

Whether you are leaning into the warm fall tones or moody violet palettes, each of these fall planter designs and combinations is so lush and seasonal in their own way. I particularly love the added stems of bittersweet, rose hips or pumpkin trees in combination with the frilly texture of ornamental kale. These arrangements even would be gorgeous for the entrance to a wedding or special fall event, but honestly, I love any occasion to have beautiful bountiful planters. What do you think? Do you have a favorite plant or flower to integrate into fall planters? If so, I would love to know in the comment section below!

Happy planting!
