It’s no secret that the months following Christmas and New Year’s before spring fully emerges are quite hard. The weather is normally dismal, schedules can feel abrupt to adapt to again and overall, the mood feels challenging. Even if you absolutely love Valentine’s Day (which many people don’t!), there doesn’t feel like much to celebrate or a season to decorate for. When Charlie and I visited Munich a few weeks ago, we even discovered that it was traditional for many Germans to leave their Christmas décor until the beginning of February to brighten spirits and add cheer to this overcast time of year. While on this side of the pond, I might not join in on leaving up my Christmas décor, I do appreciate the sentiment of establishing a way to decorate for the months of January, February and March before the weather has fully committed to spring. So, if you feel stuck between seasons, here are my favorite ways to create timeless décor to cheer yourself up without entirely redecorating and breaking the bank.
Repurpose Holiday Décor
My first, and perhaps my absolute favorite, way to decorate for these in between months is to repurpose and “winterize” holiday décor. This is such an easy way to transform the look of your home without much effort at all. Obviously, many red or green pieces that scream Christmas must be put up, but repurposing some holiday décor can be a great way to increase its lifespan. Did you add a garland over a doorway, set sprigs on your mantle or display a large bucket of greens? Take off any bright red bows and cranberry garlands and instead, think of adding in winter pieces. A subtle velvet ribbon, miniature pinecones, fresh baby’s breath or even just plain greenery can go a long way to totally transform your garlands and greens from holiday to winter. Add in a vase of bulk baby’s breath, cotton, dried white flowers or simple neutral candles nearby and suddenly your room will move from holiday celebrations to patient spring anticipation.
Utilize Books
Another great option for this time of year is to utilize books within your décor. Books are so timeless and can truly add so much warmth and depth for a layered look. Add a few to your coffee table, rearrange a stack on a console table, style bookshelves or even add a mix to create a centerpiece. Displaying books and highlighting them throughout your décor can be an easy way to utilize something you already own while giving a cozy winter feeling.
Do you love the book but don’t like the book cover or don’t think your bookshelves look cohesive enough? Change up the covers! Many people love the look of color coordinated books to go with their design, so if you don’t love a cover, give it new life with a DIY solution. Shabby Fabrics has a great Fabric Book Covers Kit and Amazon (and Michaels) both have wonderful book cloth options, but you can create your own colorful or neutral design with any spare fabric or paper you might have on hand. Conceal the existing book cover to give your favorite books a new life and let them become a part of your décor that you will love!
Force Bulbs
If utilizing books isn’t your thing and you have already packed away any holiday décor remnants, then try forcing bulbs for some pre spring floral interest! Planting bulbs to bloom outside is always a favorite, however don’t think you have to leave them for the outdoors. Forcing bulbs inside can create a stunning table centerpiece or cheerful surprise in almost any room. While some bulbs need to be pre chilled, Paperwhites and Amaryllis do particularly well when forced and do not have to be pre chilled, so just buy a few bulbs and add them to a container / dishware / vase you might already have on hand. Otherwise, look out for “pre chilled bulbs” at your local garden center and then all the hard work will be taken out for you! Both Better Homes & Gardens and Apartment Therapy have great articles for easy step by step ways to force bulbs so I highly recommend them. Forcing bulbs is quite simple and can be such a fun way to add a cheerful display to your home without spending a fortune on buying seasonal décor you have to store year after year. Planting the bulbs and watching them grow can also be a fun way to integrate kids into your décor project.
TIP: Once the flowers have passed, don’t throw them out! Instead, plant them in your garden and you will be rewarded for years to come with beautiful blooms.
Integrate Baskets
Lastly, but certainly not least, create timeless interest with baskets. I grew up hearing my mom say, “you can never have too many baskets” and truthfully, I have to agree with her! Whether integrating a basket for your books, blankets and organization or even displaying a woven lamp, adding a woven element to your room décor provides layers of texture and visual interest. Whether you just integrate these elements for this seasonally challenging time or revamp them each season, baskets are a worthy investment you have the option to use year round.
Final Thoughts
Changing up your décor for the seasons shouldn’t require you to switch out every piece you own each quarter (who has room to store all of that!), but instead should look to compliment, repurpose or highlight items you already have on hand. By repurposing holiday décor, utilizing books, forcing bulbs and integrating charming baskets, blooms and candles, your home can become cozy and comforting as you wait for the colorful burst of spring.
